What is the Counselor in Training (C.I.T) program, and who is eligible to apply?

The CIT program aims to introduce teenagers (17 to 18 yrs) to the concept of working with children of all ages and in many varying situations.

Through this concise and all encompassing program, teens will gain valuable experience and knowledge in all areas, including receiving qualifications in different areas necessary to be effective camp counselors. (See list of qualifications in section below).

The CIT program normally runs for 2 consecutive weeks and takes place during most school holidays. At Sugar Bay we teach leadership, problem-solving, team-building, and communication skills. Teens will also be taught how to deal with more sensitive issues such as bullying, behavioral problems and child abuse. Under the supervision of qualified staff they will be trained and certified to become a camp counselor.

What is the basic program run down?

During the course of the two weeks, the CIT’s will follow a specifically designed program. They will receive instruction in all qualifications listed in the section below. Each program is specifically designed, but all topics will be covered during the two weeks.

During the first week, the CIT candidates spend most of their time as campers observing how activities are run and taking part in the programmed sessions. They may be asked to assist with the setting up of evening programs and are encouraged to mix with all age groups of campers.

During the second week the CIT’s will partake in various lectures and classes and will join certain activity sessions to assist the counselors running the different activities. They may also be asked to help set up and run evening programs. On the final evening the CIT’s will be awarded with their certificates at the final campfire.
